Mobile Co-Creation

Basic info

Protomo Mobile Co-Creation (MCC) project is a technology spin-out based on Nokia Research Center developed technology, which focuses on opportunities in the early phases of content creation process and crowd sourcing. The MCC service platform enables mobile access in systematic way and offers deeper content management in collaborative media than the existing state-of-the-art in the internet (e.g. blogs, discussion forums, email). The main short term business opportunity is B2B offering for media industry, marketing companies or other enterprise and organization needing crowd sourcing in their service. The B2B can be realized with a white label vertical for different niche markets, which is good opportunity of an agile SME company.

Background

The program was started based on earlier Mobile Journalism research, and during 2009 some extended use cases were identified. The end result was MCC service platform, which connects people for co-creation – it links people and tasks. As the core functionality, MCC platform allows one to create tasks and match them with the registered users. In essence, MCC service platform is an enabler for innovative co-creation applications based on user interests and context. That is, consumers and businesses can create MCC-powered applications and find contributors to different tasks as well as collaborators based on their profiles and availability. One can say that MCC service platform brings crowd sourcing and social collaboration to everybody by leveraging mobile technologies, context, intelligent matching and the web ecosystem.

In 2009, media reporting, social media, crowd sourcing and marketing were identified as the key use cases for MCC platform.

R&D Plan

At the moment, MCC platform is on a functional prototype level. Finalizing it into a platform product level requires further work, as described below. The first technical challenge of the spin-out would be to finalize the MCC platform for media reporting and social media business cases.

This considered, required R&D work will have the following milestones during its first year in operation:

Milestone 1: B2B white label – All required features for in-house business use in place
Milestone 2: B2C Internet service – Key additional features for the use of UGC in place

In longer term, MCC spin-out R&D is likely to focus on the following topics:

  • expertise levels logic (validation)
  • matching algorithms (tasks & contributors)
  • co-creation of tasks (multiple authors for a single task)
  • game-like enablers (increased motivation to contribute)
